I received something in the mail notifying me about a class action settlement. What is that?

Video Description

My name is Ben Heikali and I'm an attorney at Faruqi and Faruqi.

You likely received something called a settlement claim form, which is simply a form that provides information about a recent class action settlement and explains your rights. You likely received the form because you're someone who may be a class member in the case, and are therefore entitled to receive some sort of compensation or recovery from the settlement.

The claim form will also explain the other options you have. While you can choose to claim the money you're entitled to, you can choose to instead exclude yourself from the settlement. Excluding yourself means you do not receive any recovery from the settlement, but are not legally bound by it. Another option you have is to object to the settlement, which is basically your way of telling the court and the parties that you do not like the settlement. Finally, if you choose to do nothing with the claim form, you'll be bound by the settlement and will not receive any recovery from it.
