A class action is a type of lawsuit in which an individual sues one or more defendants on behalf of other people who have suffered the same type of harm as a result of the defendant's alleged wrongdoing.
Class actions are often filed when many people have suffered similar harm and it would be impractical or too expensive for each person to file his or her own lawsuit. For an action to proceed as a class action, it must be certified by the court.
