In late 2021, the New York City Council passed legislation implementing thousands of updates to the city’s building code. The building code is an extensive set of rules and regulations that protect construction workers and regular New Yorkers, both while a building is being constructed and after it is finished.
In the construction phase, updates include allowing netting and chain link fencing around construction sites, instead of requiring traditional solid fencing that can create ‘blind tunnels’ on sidewalks; re-defined crane license requirements, to make sure cranes are operated safely; and limits on the combustion of materials that have certain carbon emission profiles.
In the post-construction phase, updates include new accessibility and communication standards for emergency responders; new inspection timeframes for elevators and boilers to bring them back into service more quickly; and special inspections of buildings under construction to ensure the protection of current tenants.
The updates will all go into effect in 2022, with some having taken effect as early as January 1, 2022.
