Over the weekend, the Astroworld Festival in Houston, TX was the site of immense tragedy when crowds surged during rapper and festival founder Travis Scott’s set. Eight people were killed and several others injured. Several lawsuits have already been filed, many of which focus on Travis Scott himself and his failure both to realize that fans were in danger, and to respond accordingly.
The new lawsuits strike a similar tone to one filed in 2017 in New York against Travis Scott and other defendants by Kyle Green. Mr. Green attended a Travis Scott concert at the Bowery Ballroom, where he was pushed over a third-floor balcony by a surging crowd. He was then transported by paramedics without a cervical collar or backboard, and is now partially paralyzed. Along with Travis Scott himself, Mr. Green’s 2017 lawsuit makes claims against Mr. Scott’s manager, the company that owned the venue, and the security company hired for the concert. Mr. Green’s suit alleges that it was the failure of all of these parties to exercise due care that created a dangerous concert setting, causing him to become permanently injured.
While the outcome of Mr. Green’s lawsuits – and the outcome of all potential lawsuits that arise from the Astrowold tragedy – remain to be seen, it is useful to know that if you ever attend a concert, festival, or any live music event, there are many parties responsible for keeping you safe. If you are ever injured at an event like this, those are the parties who may be held responsible for any damages you sustain.
