This is one of the most important questions a client can actually ask. And that's because the City of New York, like other municipalities, which just means town or local governments, they're given some special advantages during litigation. In fact, if you're filing a claim against the City, you need to do so within a year and 90 days. That's about half the time that you have to file against a regular defendant.
And on top of that, you also need to file what's called a Notice of Claim. It's a special document that lays out for the City exactly what you're going to be claiming. Because of that, and because it's so difficult for clients to know if they even have a claim against the City, they may not know if a City vehicle hit them or where they tripped and fell if that's a City property, that's why you have to go to see a lawyer who knows what they're doing as soon as possible.
